Large sculpted alabaster bas-relief depicting the Crucifixio - Lot 26
Large sculpted alabaster bas-relief depicting the Crucifixion. In the center stands the crucified Christ on the cross, surrounded by the two thieves. At his feet, the swooning Virgin Mary is supported by a holy woman and Saint John. On the other side is a crowned, bearded man holding in his right hand a phylactery falling from one arm of the cross. England, Nottingham, third third of the 15th century H. 55 cm - L. 26.5 (small accidents and missing parts, cracks, restorations) This central panel of an altarpiece probably dedicated to the Passion of Christ is articulated according to a typical and well-studied layout by English sculptors of the late 15th century. Christ's anatomy, marked by protuberances under the pectoral muscles, is typical of late Gothic sculpture. The armed man in the foreground holding a phylactery is the one who proclaims his faith at the moment of death, saying "This was truly the Son of God". On other bas-reliefs of the same design, the Latin text is still visible (Vere Dei Filius iste erat, Mat 24:34). On the left, a man brings his hand to his eye; this is Saint Longin, the man who pierced Christ's side and who, according to the apocryphal gospels, was blind for seven years, recovering his sight through the blood gushing from his wounds.
