19th century French school, after Jean- Auguste Dominique In - Lot 317
19th century French school, after Jean- Auguste Dominique Ingres (Montauban 1780-1867 Paris) Portrait of Madame Destouches Graphite on paper 26 x 19.5 cm (the view) 31 x 23.5 cm (the sheet) Fine copy, probably from the first half of the 19th century, of one of Ingres' most famous drawings, produced in Rome in 1816 and donated to the Musée du Louvre in 1891 by the model's son (43 x 28.5 cm ., cabinet des Arts graphiques, inv. RF 1747 recto). "Its imposing format reflects its importance, as well as the draftsman's unwavering attention to costume details (including the astonishing upturned hat). The model, Armande-Edmée Charton (1787-1831), had just married the architect Destouches, winner of the Prix de Rome in 1815, when the couple arrived at the Villa Medici in 1816. A letter from the young woman to her father (December 11, 1816) attests to her pleasure at this magnificent sheet: 'a famous artist, Mr. Ingres, who [...] has flattered me so much that he has made me an almost pretty woman'" (L.-A. Prat, "Ingres", Paris, Musée du Louvre, 5 Continents éditions, 2004).
