Partially vermeiled silver 1st title covered bouillon, resting on a tray decorated with canals and lion skins and paws, the slightly raised center bordered by moldings housing the body of the bouillon with similar decoration, the sides chased with léontés. Goldsmith: Christofle & Compagnie. Signed in full under the plate and under the body, as well as the goldsmith's hallmark. Based on a model by Charles Rossigneux. Paris work circa 1870. Tray diameter: 21.5 cm. Stock length: 19 cm. Total height: 14 cm. Weight : 1573 g. Minor wear Very important bouillon from the "Peau de lion" lunch service, designed by Charles Rossigneux and produced by the Christofle workshops. After the 1870 war, Charles Rossigneux was one of Christofle's most important suppliers and designers. The first part of his career was spent as architect-decorator to Prince Napoleon. After the fall of Napoleon, he supplied numerous designs to the bronze, jewelry, cabinet and ceramic makers of his time. In particular, he invented a bronze table with a gold and silver inlaid top for the Countess de Païva for her Champs-Elysées hotel. The "Peau de lion" model created for the Maison Christofle, while regularly found on flatware, is exceedingly rare on shaped pieces. Bibliography: for a drawing of the "Peau de lion" lunch service, on which our bouillon is illustrated, see Henri Bouilhet, L'orfèvrerie française aux XVIIIème et XIXème siècles, H. Laurens, 1912, p 119.
