François Dumont, dit Dumont aîné (Luneville 1751-1831 Paris) - Lot 296
François Dumont, dit Dumont aîné (Luneville 1751-1831 Paris) Presumed view of the gardens of the Parc de Sceaux Oil on panel 29.5 x 20.5 cm On the back, handwritten label, probably dating from before August 8, 1793 (when the Académie was dissolved): Donné à Seau / par le C[itoy]en Dumont / de l'Académie On the frame, handwritten annotation in ink probably dating from the late 18th century: Mr Dumon An interesting and poetic foray into the realm of landscapes, probably composed on the spot, by this miniature painter who was one of the best of his time. This view may be the result of a stroll in the summer of 1793, when the Sceaux estate, formerly owned by the Duc de Penthièvre (who died on March 4, 1793), was confiscated as national property. The château was briefly transformed into an agricultural school, and most of the statues were taken by Alexandre Lenoir for his museum of French monuments. In 1798, businessman Lecomte acquired the château and demolished it in 1803.
