ÉCOLE D'ABRAMTSEVO BEAUTIFUL PAIR OF ARMCHAIRS AFTER A MODEL BY VASSILY PETROVITCH CHOUTOFF (1826-1887). Russia, circa 1880/1890. Stained carved wood, with trompe-l'oeil decoration. The backrest is in the shape of a horse harness with a coachman's proverb carved in Cyrillic characters: "The more slowly you go, the further you go", equivalent to "if you want to go far, be careful with your mount", the armrests are in the shape of axes and the backrest depicts a balalaika resting on a pair of abandoned mittens. Period wear, minor accidents, but good overall condition. H. 101 cm - W. 72 cm - D. 57 cm. History: the first armchair models of this type were presented by Choutoff at the All-Russian Exhibition in St. Petersburg in 1870. On this occasion, he was awarded the bronze medal, and his reputation earned him a major commission from Emperor Alexander III for his study.
