Biography: Mikhail Vasilyevich Matushin (1861-1934) was a Russian painter born in Nizhny Novgorod. Trained as a musician - he was a violinist with the Imperial Orchestra of St. Petersburg for over 30 years, from 1882 to 1913 - Matouchine was not introduced to the techniques of the visual arts until later, between 1894 and 1905. In 1910, together with his wife, the poet Elena Gouro, he founded the "Union of Youth" painters' association in St. Petersburg. He met
Kasimir Malevich in 1912, as well as the "Futuraslaves" Mayakovsky and Alexei
Kroutchenikh. He wrote the music for the avant-garde play "Victory over the Sun". Matushin created a theory of "enlarged vision", describing the evolution of the human gaze through the ages. He wrote numerous articles on the fourth dimension, and drew some of his theoretical inspiration from the considerations of esoteric mathematician Pyotr Uspensky. He set up a working group called "zorved", or "voir-savoir" in French, and sought to test his theory in the experimental plastic arts teaching workshops, the "Svomas", and later at the Inkhouk in Petrograd. He died in Leningrad at the age of 75.
