[PROTESTANTISM - DOUBS - TÜBINGEN]. "Amicitiae dicatum". Alb - Lot 250
[PROTESTANTISM - DOUBS - TÜBINGEN]. "Amicitiae dicatum". Album amicorum of Jacques Lalance. Montbéliard, Tübingen and Stuttgart, 1784-1791. Approximately 85 pp. in-8 in Italian style, brown marbled calf, boards decorated with lace and spandrels (sunflowers and birds), spine ribbed, title page, gilt edges (Binding of the period). Heavy spotting. Watermarked laid paper from the royal paper mill of Alsace, numerous blank leaves. Manuscript collection of quotations and testimonies of friendship addressed to Jacques Frédéric Huguenot dit Lalance, bourgeois of Montbéliard, during his schooling at the "Stift" (Evangelical Lutheran seminary) of Tübingen. This prestigious theological university had been welcoming students from Montbéliard since the 16th century, thanks to the legacy of Count Georges of Wurtemberg. Jacques Frédéric Huguenot, known as Lalance, was admitted to the university through a competitive examination with his cousin Goguel, to the detriment of Georges Cuvier (1769-1832), who had to give up his vocation as a pastor and joined the Caroline Academy in Stuttgart. There are many signatories in this collection, both German and French: Lalance, Goguel, Vereneh, Wagner, Maucler, Vanenbuhler d'Heilbronn, Riquevir, Clavel, Rapp, Heigeli, Bahner, Schmid, Hallberger, Fallot, Andler, Cuvier aîné, etc. The quotations and words of friendship are written in French, German or Latin. Among the authors quoted are: Pliny, Plutarch, Cicero, Shakespeare, Pascal, Rousseau, Voltaire, Maupertuy, Montesquieu, Malebranche, etc.
