. Short cape inspired by the Renaissance, part of a stage co - Lot 344
. Short cape inspired by the Renaissance, part of a stage costume, attributed to Jean-Philippe Worth, circa 1890, Medici cape collar in gold cloth decorated with bouquets and scrolls embroidered in cream silk in stitch, in gold cordon and glass beads and glass cabochons. Border with figures of cherubs on the bottom embroidered in application of satin and gold coating, the latter pattern takes the decoration of one of the famous Florentine figurative orphreys disseminated at the end of the fifteenth century, (lining removed, wear including silk spindle in places). Related works : Stage coat of the same inspiration decorated with angel figures worn by Nellie Melba as Elsa for the opera Lohengrin by R. Wagner. A replica of a Renaissance man's cloak in the Nuremberg Museum worn by Edith Hope Goddard, wife of Charles Iselin, reproduced on the cover of Harper's Bazar, April 13, 1895. Bibl: La Maison Worth 1858-1954, Birth of Haute Couture, Bibliothèque des Arts, 2017. P.70-71 and p. 204 and 205.
