[Diary] - Lot 5
[Diary] Diary of Apollonie de Valon, née La Rochelambert, in 1844. An in-4 volume, full of green sorrow, romantic cold decoration, smooth spine, bronze clasp with key (binding of the time) Apollonie de Valon was the eldest daughter of the La Rochelambert couple. A reader for the Queen of Prussia, she married Léon de Valon (1810-1887), first as an embassy secretary, then as general counsellor and deputy for Corrèze, vice-president of the General Council of Eure, founder of the Jockey-Club. They lived in the castle of Saint-Priest (Corrèze), where they ran a salon and welcomed their friends Flaubert, Mérimée, Thiers, etc. Rich in more than a hundred handwritten pages, containing thoughts written in French and German, as well as numerous poems and excerpts from novels (Schiller, Goethe, Lamartine, Chateaubriand, von Herder, Byron, Hugo, Custine, etc.), it gives a high idea of the literary culture of a young Romantic aristocrat. On many occasions, the pages retain dried flowers. The end of the collection is enriched with notes by his children, Apolline, wife of Gaston Castelbajac, and Bertrand and Jules de Valon. Provenance: Apollonie de Valon, born La Rochelambert (1825-1904), then by descent to the present day.
