SERVICE OF THE GRAND DUCHESS CATHERINE PAVLOVNA, QUEEN OF WÜRTTEMBERG (1788-1818). Imperial Manufactory, St. Petersburg, Alexander I period. Hard-paste porcelain oval-shaped pickle, bordered by a wide frieze of polychrome flower garlands alternating with four oval medallions depicting views of Italian castles in grisaille, framed by wide gold bands. Label on reverse: "Specimen of St. Petersburgh porcelaine, painted from views of Italie in medallions, presented by the emperor Alexandre Ier to queen Catherine of Wurtemberg". Grey markings on reverse under cover: A (Alexander) under imperial crown, 1799-1802. Age wear, restorations. L.: 25 cm - W.: 18 cm. History: this service was ordered from the Imperial Manufactory by the grandheir Paul Petrovitch (future Paul I), was presented by him as a gift to his 3rd daughter, Grand Duchess Catherine Pavlovna. On May 14, 1802, the director of the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, Prince Nicolas Youssoupoff, announced the completion of work on a set of pieces from the Grand Duchess's dowry. Maria Pavlovna's dowry: a porcelain dinner service, cookie sculptures on twenty-one supports decorated with glass and bronze, two candelabras also in porcelain, glass, marble and bronze, and a porcelain tea and coffee service. In 1808, the Grand Duchess married Prince Peter Friedrich Georg of Oldenburg (1784-1812) and gave birth to two sons, Alexander and Peter. After her husband's death in 1812, she married Prince Guillaume of Württemberg on January 24, 1816. Guillaume de Wurtemberg (future king) and settled in Stuttgart, where she brought her dowry with her, including this porcelain dinner service.
