STELLETSKY Dimitri Semenovitch (1875-1947). - Lot 206
STELLETSKY Dimitri Semenovitch (1875-1947). Alionushka - Seated girl. Glazed ceramic sculpture, signed and numbered below the base in the paste: N5. Slight age wear, but good overall condition. H. 20 cm - L. 20 cm - W. 11.5 cm. History: Russian folklore and its characters greatly inspired Stelletsky, who sought to show a strong link between nature and mankind and to orient his art towards an original theme. Alionushka represents the young woman emanating from the Russian forests, its vegetation and rivers, an effect that the ochre colors employed by the artist help to form. Moreover, the young Alionushka's contemplative, somewhat dreamy pose recalls the famous painting by Victor Vasnetsoff, exhibited at the Galerie Trétiakoff, 1881. Here, Dmitri Stelletsky returns to his first love, since before devoting himself to painting, he studied sculpture under Vladimir Béklémicheff (1861-1919), starting in 1897 at the Higher Institute of Arts, then at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts. Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. Provenance: this sculpture comes directly from the artist's studio, as can be seen in the attached photo, where it stands behind the artist. It was a gift from the artist during emigration to Countess Alexandra Illarionova Worontzoff-Dashkoff. This photographic postcard featuring Alionushka on the reverse was sent to the Countess from La Napoule on December 23, 1932 by Stelletsky, with whom he maintained a correspondence.
