Two offering boxes from the Mandalay Palace Mandalay Palace, Myanmar, late 19th century. Circular in shape, finely crafted from turned bamboo, lacquered and gilded with gold leaf. The whole is decorated with glassware depicting decorative floral motifs. This type of object was used to carry food to the King or, in some cases, bethel, a drug with a euphoric, appetite-suppressant effect. Both boxes bear a handwritten label on the inside: "Coffre rond en tige de plumes assemblées, doré et orné de verroteries servant à porter les aliments au King. From the looting of the Mandalay palace where King Tibo was taken prisoner by the English in 1885. Bernard Franck Collection." Bernard Franck (1848-1924) was an important collector of late 19th-century militaria and historical memorabilia. It was dispersed at major auctions from 1935 to 1955.
