Large, high-relief, polychromed and gilded oak altarpiece-tr - Lot 93
Large, high-relief, polychromed and gilded oak altarpiece-triptych. In the center, a bust of the Virgin Mary carries her Child before her, holding out a flower. She emerges from a crescent moon and is surrounded by rays. Two angels at the top hold the draperies of a canopy. The right panel depicts the Nativity; the left panel, the Annunciation to the Shepherds and the Flight into Egypt. Reverse of the panels painted with the Annunciation scene. Spanish-Flemish school, early 16th century H. 98 cm - W. 137.5 cm (small accidents and slight missing parts) Provenance: Collection of Monsieur X, Franche-Comté. Flemish and Burgundian sculptors came to Spain to work in Castilian workshops from the end of the 15th century. On our altarpiece, the Flemish influence is visible in the curls of the Virgin's hair. However, the use of dark polychromy, including a distinctive red, is reminiscent of Spanish production. Last but not least, Spanish craftsmen were masters of the art of wrought iron; the hinges on this triptych, with their splayed legs, are typically Spanish.
