Hat pins, parasols and combs
XIXth -XXth centuries
A fine collection of hatpins from the late 19th to the early 20th century, illustrating the spirit of Art Nouveau, aviation and hit pieces such as Chantecler.
Pretty fantasy was at its height, as Femina magazine noted in February 1910: "In all the jewelry and feminine object stores, I see new marvels of this kind every day (...). They are made of metal adorned with brilliant stones imitating real diamonds, rubies and sapphires. It goes without saying that it's not forbidden to own them in real stones, but the hatpin is not considered a real piece of jewelry, and the most scrupulous and fortunate people are perfectly at liberty to wear this imitation".
In the metro and on buses, they are also "permanent threats" or "formidable weapons" that legislation in Europe and elsewhere is trying to render harmless by adding "hat covers".
