Kees VAN DONGEN (1877-1968) Avenue du bois de Boulogne Oil on canvas. Signed at the bottom in the center. Titled Avenue du bois de Boulogne and monographed VD on the back of the canvas. Inscription in Fiacre blue chalk on the back of the canvas Old label glued on the frame of the Paul Pétridès Gallery rue de la Boétie in Paris. 54 x 65 cm Circa 1954 Provenance: French private collection. Certificate from the Galerie Pétridès dated 16 November 1959. A notice of inclusion in the digital catalogue raisonné being prepared by the Wildenstein Plattner Institute will be provided to the purchaser. A photograph of the painter painting in his studio will be given to the buyer. The Avenue du Bois de Boulogne, painted in the early 1950s, illustrates the singularity and permanence of Van Dongen's style, indifferent to the artistic upheavals of his time and the succession of avant-garde movements. Faithful, through the audacity and originality of the colours, to the fauvism of his early years, inspired by a worldly and refined Paris, he also extends his painting of the Roaring Twenties, a period in which he had been the emblematic painter; what he himself called his cocktail period. Along Avenue du Bois (renamed Avenue Foch), under light cloud flakes, elegant silhouettes stroll, circulate or land with a little girl and a poodle. A horse-drawn carriage goes up the avenue towards the Arc de Triomphe while in the distance horsemen galloping down it. The scene, which charms by its lightness, its artifice and by its alliances of refined colours, candy pink opposed to bright yellows, red-green opposition of the body and the wheels of the carriage, acquires a kind of dreamlike softness. The slender legs on the slender bodies, the small heads with masked cheeks and graceful necks that characterize the female barrel of the mature Van Dongen, had already appeared in the 1910s (La Baigneuse, 1911-Amusement, 1912, Musée de Grenoble) .
