Sumptuous ceremonial tablecloth embroidered on the theme of opera, early 20th century. Made of fine linen canvas, entirely and very finely embroidered by hand with a superb and remarkable Appenzell embroidery, drawn yarn, spread yarn, feathers and sand stitch. Rich decor composed of 16 large medallions each illustrating a scene from a different opera, including "Madame Butterfly" by Giacomo Puccini, "Carmen" by Georges Bizet, "Tristan et Iseult","Faust", "Rienzi, der Letzte der Tribunen" by Richard Wagner, "Les Noces de Figaro" and "Cosi fan Tutte" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, "Rigoletto" by Giuseppi Verdi, "La Bohème" by Giacomo Puccini, etc....and well supported by a series of long cartouches in the shape of embroidered garlands of roses and flowers, the whole enclosed in a very fine work of stylized roses and scrolls of drawn threads embroidered running to the edges of the tablecloth. Dim. 4,40 m x 1,80 m (good condition, rare tiny snags on the drawn yarn)
