Emmanuel Fremiet (1824-1910) - Lot 72
Emmanuel Fremiet (1824-1910) Horse at rest with long Bronze horsehair with brown patina, signed E. Fremiet on the terrace. Rare 19th century sculpture. L: 30 cm, H: 26 cm This bronze was made during the artist's lifetime and under his control around 1860 (Fremiet from 1872 asked the More workshop to cast his pieces). Its design seems to date back to the commission of the miniature Imperial army made by Emperor Napoleon III in Fremiet through the Superintendent of Fine Arts the Earl of Nieuwerkerke. Unfortunately, most of this wonderful collection was destroyed during the Tuileries fire during the War of 1870. Fremiet took this horse back as the horse of the Gallic chief dating from 1864 and commissioned by the National Antiquities Museum. It is interesting to mention that these pieces made early in the artist's life bear the small signature E. Fremiet that can be found on this horse. The artist, for the design of this model, seems to have been inspired by the setting of the Imperial Prince called "Buttercup" for whom the miniature Imperial army was initially intended. This sculpture appears particularly rare since it is not mentioned in the imposing work of Catherine Chevillot, curator of the Musée d'Orsay "La Main et le multiple" devoted to the work of Fremiet
