One Thousand and One Nights, France, circa 1830–1840 Folded fan, with a double sheet of lithographed and gouache-painted paper depicting an Orientalist scene. In the private quarters of an Eastern palace, a sultan is surrounded by women. Near him, dressed in white, one of them speaks to him and captivates him. The couple is depicted on the right on the palace steps. The reverse side features a lithograph and gouache painting of a couple in the grounds of a château during the reign of King Louis XIV, perhaps evoking the love affairs of the Sun King. White mother-of-pearl frame, re-drilled, engraved, and gilded with a foliage and floral motif. Overall height: 25 cm; frame height: 14 cm (signs of wear, cuts)
