Saint Marguerite in alabaster carved in the round. Standing - Lot 47
Saint Marguerite in alabaster carved in the round. Standing with a dragon at her feet, the saint holds an open book in her left hand, her right hand raised. Her abundant hairstyle is made up of wavy locks falling over her left shoulder; she is wearing a veil, a girdled dress and a mantle, one side of which returns to the front, forming tiered folds. Southern Netherlands, Flanders, early 16th century H. 48.5 cm (Slightly missing, wings restored) The saint is clothed in a mantle that covers the entire sculpture, revealing only her face and hand. The very pronounced, highly architectural broken folds suggest that this work should be compared with the early 16th-century corpus from the Southern Netherlands, and more specifically with a Vierge de Calvaire in the Louvre (inv. RF 1439), probably from Cambrai Cathedral (fig). Book consulted : M. Debaene (dir), Alabaster Sculpture in Europe, 1300-1650, London - Turnhout, Harvey Miller, 2022, no.31, p.100
