Apostle's head in walnut carved in the round. Oval face with - Lot 38
Apostle's head in walnut carved in the round. Oval face with emaciated features, abundant hair with curly locks, moustache and bifid beard formed by two wavy locks. Very pronounced superciliary arches, deep-set eyes with slightly swollen eyelids, pronounced nasal wrinkles. Alsace, workshop of Veit Wagner (1470-1516), late 15th century H. 28 cm (Fragment, small worm marks) Soclée The Strasbourg sculptor Veit Wagner left a number of well-documented works that allow us to link this head of an apostle or saint to his own production and that of his workshop. It can be compared with the group of St. Aegis and St. Benedict in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Mulhouse (inv. 155), as well as with the numerous figures in the monumental group on the Mount of Olives in Strasbourg Cathedral. In these figures, we note a particular way of expressing feelings, with a certain emphasis on the wrinkles between the nose and mouth, falling onto the cheeks, a perfect modeling of the nose itself and the marked folds in which it hollows out the eyelids.
