Bust of Christ as a Man of Suffering in polychrome terracott - Lot 32
Bust of Christ as a Man of Suffering in polychrome terracotta; hollowed back. Christ crosses his hands in front of him. Handsome, elongated oval face, with wavy hair falling to his shoulders, slender eyes, fine nose, small, half-open mouth and bifid beard. Drops of blood bead on his forehead and cheeks. He is dressed in a tunic with a rectangular neckline, with a cloak over his left shoulder. Italy, Lombardy, attributed to Giovanni de Fondulis (Crema, 1435 - Padua, 1491) or workshop, second half of the 15th century H. 50 cm - L. 51 cm (Giovanni de Fondulis was a Lombard sculptor who had fallen into obscurity. His name resurfaced in 2006 with the restoration of the Pietà de Camponogara, housed in the church of San Michele Arcangelo in Prozzolo (Campagara, Veneto). A biography of the sculptor, written by the artist's specialist Marco Scansani, now provides a better understanding of Giovanni de Fondulis' corpus, and enables us to compare this bust with the face of the dead Christ in the Pièta de Camponogara (fig). Scultura i terracotta del Rinascimento da Donatello a Riccio [catalog of the exhibition presented at the Padua Diocesan Museum from February 15 to June 2, 2020], Padua - Verona, 2020, no. 13.
