Saint abbess, St. Clare, carved limestone, hollowed back. St - Lot 25
Saint abbess, St. Clare, carved limestone, hollowed back. Standing, holding the book of the rule in her right hand, she is dressed in a girdled bure, a scapular and an open mantle, one side of which falls back to the front. A wimple covers her head and a short veil is placed over it. Champagne, late 14th century (Damage and missing parts, recorking) H. 108 cm In 1220, the city of Reims welcomed the first French foundation of a convent of Poor Clares. Tradition has it that three sisters came on foot from Assisi at the call of the city's archbishop to found a monastery. This community, which still exists today, has of course undergone many vicissitudes over the centuries, but in spite of this has had an important influence in spreading the Franciscan spirit. It is conceivable that this holy abbess in Franciscan garb could be St. Clare of Assisi, and could adorn either the convent's abbey church or a church dedicated to the "sister of St. Francis".
