Tripod bronze jug, globular body, high neck with handle, lon - Lot 11
Tripod bronze jug, globular body, high neck with handle, long spout with stylized animal head. Flanders, 14th century H. 24 cm (Small dent in the body) This type of jug was produced in Germany, England and Northern Europe, regions where they can be seen today in museum collections, which hold several of the fifty or so examples documented to date. Three-legged bronze jugs with tubular spouts and flat handles were probably the most common small-format water containers in the 14th and 15th centuries, when they were part of the toiletry set. The bronze of which the object is made and the three feet that support it enabled it to be brought close to the embers of the hearth, to heat the water it contained. A depiction of this type of object appears in an illustrated copy of the Decretals of Gregory IX, written in England in the early 14th century and preserved in the British Library in London (fig).
