CHINA, Song Dynasty - Lot 62
CHINA, Song Dynasty Large qingbai porcelain cosmetic box, circular in shape, containing a suite of three small dishes and flowers, molded in the paste, all covered with a cracked celadon glaze. The lid is chased with a bird among foliage. H. 6 cm - D. 14.5 cm (Small chips) Ceramic cosmetic boxes were very popular during the Song dynasty (960-1279), and many examples have survived to the present day. Our model is decorated with a finely incised bird on the lid. The interior contains four small containers in the shape of open flowers, interconnected by fine scrolls. Thanks to the plasticity of Jingdezhen porcelain, potters were able to create complex shapes while retaining a utilitarian vocation, as demonstrated by this case designed to hold cosmetic powders.
