Large porcelain bowl decorated with an episode from The Nove - Lot 27
Large porcelain bowl decorated with an episode from The Novel of the Western Pavilion enameled in green family enamels China. Kangxi period (1662-1722) The gadrooned bowl is decorated in green family enamels. In the center of the basin is a historiated scene and on the wing four cartouches with lake landscapes on a stippled background. The rim is painted with a frieze of squares punctuated by four cartouches with auspicious motifs. The story depicted on this plate is taken from Xi Xiang Ji (Novel of the Western Pavilion). The three characters depicted are Zhang Sheng, Cui Yingying and the monk Hui Ming. The scene illustrated corresponds to the episode in which Sun Fei Hu encircles the Pu Jiu Si monastery with his soldiers; the three protagonists are depicted together in the temple. This painting may be entitled "Pu Jiu Si Ti Bi", meaning "Cui Yingying inscribing a poem on a wall, as Zhang Sheng and the monk Hui Ming". This poem was the trigger for the love affair between Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying. Later generations also referred to this scene as "The miraculous encounter in the Buddhist temple". Many polychrome porcelains from the Kangxi period Kangxi period are decorated with scenes from the novel of the Western Pavilion, but the episodes chosen and the appearance of the characters vary considerably from artist to artist. However, all convey the same meaning: the celebration of their defiance of social conventions and their quest for free love. Mugwort leaf mark within a double blue underglaze border on reverse.
