Lasellaz and Vaillant (?) for Rodien - Lot 204
Lasellaz and Vaillant (?) for Rodien Les petits pêcheurs, France, circa 1890-1900 A large, folded fan with an English-mounted skin sheet painted with a delicate composition. Two children are fishing with nets in a fantastic setting of shells and flowers. Signed on the painter's right "Lasellaz" for Gustave Lasellaz (1848-1910). Reverse painted with stylized foliage and feathers. Stunning mother-of-pearl mounting. The throat features a finely gilded scallop shell, while the sculpted plumes evoke intertwined corals. A very similar setting, with the shell motif for the throat and corals for the plumes, is signed and dated "Jules Vaillant" "1891" ("Les océanides", Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris - Palais Galliera inv. 1966.44.14). The plume is signed "Rodien Paris" for Adrien Rodien. The plume is signed "Rodien Paris" for Adrien Rodien. In the final years of the 19th century, Rodien was a major fan maker in Paris and Europe. Successor to Viginet, patented supplier to Empress Eugénie from 1859 onwards, he commissioned exceptional pieces from artists, which drew attention to him. At the 1889 Universal Exhibition, for example, he commissioned the same duo, Jules Vaillant and Gustave Lasellaz, to work on "Le Soleil et les Heures" (The Sun and the Hours), which has since been lost to history. They also collaborated on "Le triomphe d'Amphitrite", a fan in the collections of FIDM Los Angeles (Coutau-Bégarie, November 2018). H.t. 35.5 cm-H.f. 27.5 cm (wear, restorations)
