Léopold de Moulignon, The Portrait of Love, France, circa 18 - Lot 155
Léopold de Moulignon, The Portrait of Love, France, circa 1860 Folded fan, the double skin sheet painted with gouache. On a trellis effect punctuated with roses, three cartouches host scenes painted in rose monochrome. In the center, Venus paints the portrait of a woman in love, while on the sides, two of them play music and a third presents game caught on the hunt. Discreet signature and date in the center "Léopold de Moulignon 1860", for Léopold de Moulignon (1821-1897), a pupil of Delaroche and Picot. The Musée d'Orsay holds a drawing for a fan leaf dated 1859, with the same trellis-effect decoration, and an identical central cartel (inv. 24178). The reverse is engraved with a double "M" and bordered with a cornflower frieze. Beautiful burgau mother-of-pearl mounting, finely engraved and gilded with foliage. H.t. 27.8 cm-H.f. 14 cm (wear)
