Frères Gimbel (attributed to), The Peddler, France, circa 18 - Lot 153
Frères Gimbel (attributed to), The Peddler, France, circa 1860-1870 Exceptional fan, the double skin sheet painted with gouache of a village gathered to dance. Men sit at tavern tables, while women and children crowd around a peddler. A medieval castle dominates the landscape, and the half-timbered houses evoke Alsace. The central composition is very similar to a fan signed by the Gimbel brothers; illustrated in H. Merkle, "Die Baden-Bedener Fächermaler Karl und Georg Gimbel", Aquae 2016, p.80. The Gimbel brothers, Georges and Charles, were genre and history painters from Strasbourg. Spire Blondel ("Histoire des éventails dans tous les pays et à toutes les époques", Paris, ed. Librairie Renouard, 1875, p. 180) mentions the quality of their work: "It is to the fertility of their brush that we must attribute, in part, the resurrection of the antique fan (...). The leaves executed by these two artists are rarely signed". The reverse is decorated with a garland of roses, pansies, cornflowers and lilacs. Rare white mother-of-pearl frame, richly and finely beaded, carved, engraved and enhanced with colored varnish. Ten figures stroll or dance on either side of a statue. The sprigs are enriched with numerous loves. The plumes are adorned with oval medallions in porcelain or enamel, painted with gallant scenes in the taste of the 18th century. H.t. 28.5 cm-H.f. 13.4 cm (very good condition, restorations)
