L'histoire d'Esther, France, circa 1750 A rare folded fan, k - Lot 79
L'histoire d'Esther, France, circa 1750 A rare folded fan, known as a "full-flight" fan, the skin sheet lined with paper and painted with gouache. A magnificent palace hosts a banquet. A man wearing caftan and turban kneels before a sovereign, begging for mercy. A sultan appears on the right, his train held in place by a small page. The composition probably evokes the story of Esther and Ahasuerus. The reverse is illustrated with an encounter among palm trees. Beautiful and rare ivory mount, called "full flight" because it opens 180 degrees, pierced, carved, engraved and gilded. H.t.30cm-H.f.13,4cm (wear, restorations)
