Les noces d'Énée et Lavinia, France, circa 1750 Folded fan, - Lot 67
Les noces d'Énée et Lavinia, France, circa 1750 Folded fan, the leaf in skin, painted in gouache of a majestic palace hosting a large gathering. In the center, a priest welcomes a couple he is about to unite. Both are wearing crowns. Soldiers, servants and child musicians attend the union. Some are wearing oriental costumes. A handwritten note in ink on the left, "Cérémonie du mariage d'Énée et Lavigna", identifies the union between the Trojan and the daughter of the King of Delos. The reverse is painted with Adonis leaving Venus to go hunting. Beautiful white mother-of-pearl mount cut, reperforated, carved, engraved, burgundy and gilded of a soldier succumbing while a general appears triumphant on a chariot. Standards and armor adorn the side panels. The composition is repeated on the reverse. Closed, the fan features painted flowers on its original border. Height 29.7 cm-H.f. 13.2 cm (restorations, cuts, accidents)
