Fossin père joaillier, Le temple de Vesta à Tivoli, France a - Lot 41
Fossin père joaillier, Le temple de Vesta à Tivoli, France and Italy, circa 1815-1820 Exceptional jeweler's fan, a souvenir of the Grand Tour, the double cabretille leaf painted with a view of the temple of Vesta at Tivoli in Italy. Decorations on the sides recall the frescoes in the newly discovered homes of patricians in Pompeii and Herculaneum. The mute reverse. Painted in Italy, the fan leaves were brought back by travelers on the Grand Tour to be mounted in France. White mother-of-pearl frame, finely engraved with rosettes. The gold plumes are carved and engraved with an arrow, and punctuated with roses set with half-pearls of turquoise, and alternating emeralds, garnets or rubies. One bears the engraved inscription "Fossin", the other "Paris". A fan with an identical plume is illustrated in Henri Vever, "La bijouterie française au XIXe siècle (1800-1900)", tome 1, Paris, p.84-85 (np). Jean-Baptiste Fossin père (1786-1848) was a jeweler on rue Richelieu in Paris in 1815. With his son, they became "jewelers to the King and the Royal Family" under Louis-Philippe. They took over from Nitot, supplier to Emperor Napoleon. His workshop manager Morel took over. His daughter married Joseph Chaumet, giving birth to the present-day jewelry house at 15 place Vendôme.
