Coromandel lacquer writing desk for European use made of wood inlaid on the outside with burr wood and inlaid with white brass (huantong) fillets. The double-hinged lid opens vertically to reveal a Coromandel lacquer panel decorated, on either side of a black lacquer panel, with two archaistic Gu vases holding two bouquets. The compartmentalized is black lacquered. China, Qing dynasty, 18th century H. 15 cm x W. 54 cm x D. 42 cm (Some cracks, metal fillet lifted, mirror missing) Provenance: Exhibited at the Biennale by CT Loo in 1986
