Early 18th century Cuzco school - Lot 326
Early 18th century Cuzco school Saint Isidore holding a stick in the middle of fields animated by peasants, horses and oxen and spouting water Oil on canvas 85.5 x 62.3 cm Saint Isidore le Laboureur (circa 1070 - 1130) is invoked by the Church's faithful to combat drought and promote good harvests. Canonized in the 17th century, he was a Madrid peasant who prayed so hard that an angel plowed the fields for him while he meditated. Here, the saint is depicted as a patron saint, spouting water in the middle of fields. His life is mainly revealed through hagiographic accounts, anchoring an oral tradition.
