Crucifixion in stamped leather, marouflé on oak panel, with - Lot 239
Crucifixion in stamped leather, marouflé on oak panel, with remains of gilding and silvering. From an engraving of "La Crucifixion" by Maarten de Vos. Amsterdam, attributed to the manufacture of Willem van den Heuvel or Jacob Hamer, mid-17th century H. 42.5 cm - W. 31.6 cm (slight accidents, missing silver and gilding, small worm holes). In a gilded wooden frame; inscriptions in ink on the back. Provenance: collection of Mr. James M***, New York, 1866 Two Amsterdam workshops are known to have produced small devotional paintings in gilded leather: the workshop of Marten and Willem van den Heuvel and that of Jacob Hamer. It is difficult to attribute the production of this Crucifixion to one of the two workshops in particular, as both used the same models. Seventeen panels are referenced today, and a number of them are kept in major museums: in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv n° W.8-1980), in the Deutsches Ledermuseum in Offenbach-on-the-Main (inv n° 2524), the Colomer-Munmany Colomer-Munmany collection in Victoria (Spain) (inv n° C812); Köpenick Castle, Berlin (inv n° K 9239b), Episcopal Museum, Victoria (Spain) (inv n° 6045), Musée national de la Renaissance d'Écouen (inv n° A15062 ), Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv n° BK 1994-1), Museum of Leathercraft, Northampton, catalogue number unknown; and in a church in Somerset (letter from J.W. Waterer of 27/02/1973, RP 79/2457).
