Saint George slaying the dragon in carved walnut, rough-hewn - Lot 121
Saint George slaying the dragon in carved walnut, rough-hewn and polychromed back. Dressed in armor, the saint wounds the sucker with his spear. He wears the visor of his helmet raised; in one hand, he holds the queens of his horse, which is armed with leather straps and rosettes. Middle Rhine, Alsace ? late 15th century H. 88 cm (worming and polychromatic damage) The wound inflicted by Saint George on this evil beast is depicted here with an expression that is both strong and tranquil. This iconographic expression can be compared with a sculpture in the Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach (fig. a), which has the same way of expressing the saint's superiority over evil. Another sculpture sold in London at Bonham's on October 25, 2017, lot no. 30 (fig. b), with the same harnessing of the horse and the same type of armor for the rider.
