Carved limestone shield-bearer. Wearing a hood, he holds bef - Lot 103
Carved limestone shield-bearer. Wearing a hood, he holds before him a shield with a lion rampant, langued and crowned, known as the Royal Lion of Scotland. England, mid-15th century H. 57 cm - L. 33 cm (erosion and missing parts) English sculptures are rare on the art market outside of alabaster works from the Nottingham workshops. In this case, it's the very special headdress that makes it possible to date this sculpture. In fact, the same type of chaperon worn by the Duke of Lancaster can be found on an illustrated coat of arms of the Order of the Garter, preserved at the British Library in London and dated 1443 (inv n° Stowe MS594) (fig).
