Brass and silver tabernacle door, repoussé and gilded, depic - Lot 97
Brass and silver tabernacle door, repoussé and gilded, depicting two scenes from the Life of Joseph. It consists of two riveted rectangular plates with hinges and a keyhole. 20th century H.: 25.2 cm - W.: 21 cm Gross weight: 722 gr (slight wear) The decoration is inspired by the ivory bas-reliefs on the "Pulpit of Maximian" in the Archiepiscopal Museum of Ravenna, attributed to an Italian or Constantinople workshop of the second half of the 6th century. The scenes reproduced here are taken from the cycle of the Life of Joseph: in the upper register, Joseph is sold by his brothers, and in the lower register, he is recognized by his family in Pharaoh's palace. The frieze of vine leaves, birds and hares around the edge is inspired by the same group of ivories.
