Sculpted marble bust of a man, rough back. - Lot 94
Sculpted marble bust of a man, rough back. This fragment, probably from a sarcophagus with historiated scenes in high relief, shows a middle-aged, bearded figure draped in a toga. Italy or southern Gaul, late 3rd / early 4th century H. 17.5 cm - W. 8.5 cm - D. 7 cm (wear and tear.) On a Plexiglas base This man's face, marked by the signs of age, evokes the type known as the "Philosopher", widespread in Late Imperial funerary sculpture. Frequently used to represent Christ and the Apostles, his features are serious, calm and deeply incised. The curls of the beard, the hair and the pupils have been enhanced with a trepan, characteristic of Late Antique glyptics. Although it cannot be attributed with certainty to a Christian monument, this bust can be compared with the figure of the apostle Peter that appears on the front of the sarcophagus of Junius Bassus, produced in the mid-4th century and preserved in the Vatican Museums (fig.).
