Exceptional walnut and wrought-iron bread cutter or bread bo - Lot 9
Exceptional walnut and wrought-iron bread cutter or bread board, embossed and dated 1698. Walnut board carved on the pediment with a coat of arms; on the left a lion bearing a shield surrounded by a plant garland and on the right a fleur-de-lys and the monogram "S" "K" on either side and two stars in chief, itself surrounded by a plant garland. Wrought-iron blade and lock, lightly engraved with knotwork articulated on a shaft featuring a finely chased phoenix with outstretched wings and open beak. Eastern France, late 17th century L.: 82.5 cm -- W.: 29.7 cm (wear to the board) This breadboard is part of a well-known repertoire of folk art from eastern France, but is far superior both in its quality of execution and in its dating to the Louis XIV period.
