Cuzco school circa 1700 - Lot 122
Cuzco school circa 1700 The Virgin seated in front of the hearth and adolescent Jesus sweeping a kitchen interior, surrounded by two angels and Joseph the Carpenter Oil on canvas with gold highlights and brocateado decoration H. 49 cm x L.38.5 cm After the Flight into Egypt, the Gospel of Matthew (2, 22-23) tells of the Holy Family's settlement in Nazareth. It is from this begins what is known as Jesus' "hidden life". Little information is divulged in the canonical texts. apocryphal writings, notably the Gospel of Pseudo_x0002_Matthew. In chapter 31, we read: "And when Jesus was ten years old he began to help Joseph in his work [...]". These unofficial accounts have served as an iconographic source for many artists over the centuries. In particular, this passage sets the scene for a modest home, where Jesus helps Mary and Joseph in their daily lives. This model family is depicted on this canvas, where the Virgin is busy in front of the hearth and Joseph at his carpenter's trade. The modesty of the family is counterbalanced by the lush style of the Cuzco School of Cuzco, with its typical decorations of gold highlights and brocateado.
