In December 1788, Charles IV, son of Charles III and Marie-Amélie de Saxe, was proclaimed King of Spain. To mark the occasion, a number of institutions - municipalities, universities, guilds - ordered medals, each decorated on one side with a bust of the new king and distributed to distinguished recipients in celebration. The reverse of the medals featured the arms or insignia of the sponsoring institution, some designed by the engraver Geronimo Antonio Gil. Export china orders were placed for seven of these medals, each faithfully reproducing the details of the original in the colors of famille rose enamel. For a comprehensive history of the medals, see A. Diez de Rivera, Proclamation Medals and Related Chinese Export Services in the Reign of Charles IV of Spain, Oriental Art, vol.
