Very large porcelain dish with armorial decoration for the A - Lot 97
Very large porcelain dish with armorial decoration for the Austrian or Dutch market (Kruger). China. Qianlong period (1736-1795), circa 1740 Decorated in famille rose enamels, with the coat of arms attributed to the Krueger family of Austria in a rocaille cartouche in the center, supported by a lion and a unicorn, a border of interlacing and shells, with emblems of music and love in pink and grisaille camaïeu. A large dish from this commission was in the Mottahedeh collection (see Howard and Ayers, China for the West, Vol. II, p. 454). Often attributed to the Swedish market, Howard points out that the nearest coats of arms belong to the Austrian family of the Krueger family. A branch of this family settled in Holland and Sweden around 1700 (Sophonias Krüger was in Canton for the Swedish East India Company in 1734). For another large dish from this commission, see Christie's New York, The Peter H. B. Frelinghuysen Jr. Collection of Chinese Export Porcelain, January 24, 2012, lot 122 (adj. 8,750 USD). A coffee pot in the Benjamin Edwards III collection (Christie's New York, January 22, 2002, lot 167) and a large basin published by Cohen & Cohen, Hit & Myth, 2014, pp. 118-119, no. 68.
