Porcelain plate with coat-of-arms decoration for the Swedish - Lot 90
Porcelain plate with coat-of-arms decoration for the Swedish market (von Höpkens). China. Period Yongzheng period (1723-1735). Decorated in famille rose enamels with the coat of arms of the von Höpkens family, with a frieze of trellises on the cavetto and floral throws and medallions on the rim. Probably commissioned by Colin Campbell Campbell for Daniel Nicholas von Höpkens, on the very first voyage made by the Gothenburg-based Swedish East India Company, an expedition that Colin Campbell personally led as First Supra Cargo First Supra Cargo and Ambassador Plenipotentiary of His Swedish Majesty King Adolph Friedrich of Sweden, in 1732-1733. Daniel Nicholas von Höpkens (1669- 1741) was created a baron in 1719 and became Minister of the Interior in 1720, then Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. He had already obtained a charter for the foundation of a Swedish East India Company in the 1720s, but probably failed to raise the necessary capital. When the SEIC was actually founded a decade later, Daniel Nicholas von Höpkens became a shareholder. See Sven T. Kjellberg, Svenska Ostindiska Companiet 1731-1813, 2015, p. 234. Diameter: 23 cm
