Rare porcelain plate with armorial decoration for the Englis - Lot 79
Rare porcelain plate with armorial decoration for the English market (Okeover). China. Qianlong period (1736-1795), circa 1738-1740 Enameled, gilded and silvered with the coats of arms of Okeover and Nichol on a white and red iron mantling, the arms rising from the water and supported by white horses flanked by pennants. On the wing, a floral border with four rocaille-style cartouches flanked by dolphins and rising from the water, the cartouches at the top and bottom enclosing the numeral LMO for Leake and Mary Okeover on a gilded shell. The cartouches on the sides with a dragon rampant above a wreath. The richly decorated Leake Okeover service is considered one of the finest examples of Chinese armorial orders for export. This sumptuous commission, with its opulent design showing no Chinese influence, was made for Leake Okeover (1702-1765), who married Mary Nichol around 1730. His estate passed to his cousin, whose descendant, Sir Ian Walker-Okeover, Bt. sold around one hundred pieces from this commission at Christie's in London in London in March 1975. Pieces from this commission are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum, the New Orleans Museum of Fine Art (...). Diameter : 23 cm
