Pair of large porcelain dishes with armorial decoration for - Lot 73
Pair of large porcelain dishes with armorial decoration for the English market (Craggs). China. Kangxi period (1662-1722), circa 1718-1720 The dishes feature a special technique combining Imari, doucai and iron-red enamels, with the Craggs coat of arms surrounded by a profusion of flower scrolls. On the rim, a border of trellises punctuated by six floral cartouches. The commission was probably made for the Craggs of Westminster, and in particular for Rt. Hon. James Cragg (1686-1721), Secretary of State for War. For a pair of slightly larger dishes, see Sotheby's New York, The Collection Of Khalil Rizk, April 25, 2008, lot 6 (adj. 49000 USD). This armorial commission has been part of some of the world's greatest collections: Leo & Doris Hodroff, Benjamin Edwards, Wolf. Diameter: 36 cm
