Porcelain plate with armorial decoration for the French market (Fontanieu). China. Qianlong period (1736-1795), circa 1755 Decorated in famille rose enamels, with a frieze of bamboos and flower sprays on the side. In the center, the Fontanieu family coat of arms, d'Azur, with a golden chevron, accompanied in chief by two silver stars and in base by a rock of the same title. The commission was carried out for Gaspard-Moïse de Fontanieu (1694-1767), Marquis de Fiennes et de Fontanieu. He began his career as avocat du roi at the Châtelet in 1714, and was appointed maître des requêtes at the Parlement de Paris in 1719. In 1723, he was a member of the first office of the Council of the Indies, and was appointed Contrôleur général des meubles de la Couronne from 1718 to 1767. Intendant of the Dauphiné from 1724 to 1740, he was admitted to the Conseil d'État in 1740, and in 1745 became First President of the Grand Conseil. He was a historian and collector, and the father of Pierre de Fontanieu (1731-1784), who like him was Intendant and Controller General of the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne from 1767 to 1784.
