Rare and large porcelain display stand with European decorat - Lot 32
Rare and large porcelain display stand with European decoration. China. Qianlong period (1736-1795), circa 1770 Provenance: Jorge Welsh, Lisbon The oblong dish, decorated in famille rose enamels and depicting dancers. Frieze of spearheads on the cavetto. We know of only a few examples of this rare decoration. It is said to represent Benjamin Franklin being received by Queen Marie-Antoinette at the French court. More likely, it depicts a dancing couple from an engraving, possibly by Johannes Esaias Nilson (1721-1788). For a plate and platter depicting this rare decoration, see Cohen & Cohen, Baroque & Roll, 2016, no. 64 & 65; and Hervouët & Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, 1986, 1986, pp. 140- 141, nos. 7.1-7.3. Dim. 36.5 cm x 29 cm
