Porcelain sugar bowl decorated with a musician (L'Automne). - Lot 25
Porcelain sugar bowl decorated with a musician (L'Automne). China. Qianlong period (1736-1795), circa 1750 Decorated in famille rose enamels, with a dancing couple and a musician, after an engraving by Johann Esaias Nilson (1721-1788) depicting Autumn (from the series The Seasons by Johann Georg Hertel). Two other designs in the series, Spring and Summer, are also found on Chinese export pieces. The design, however, is clearly based on the 18th-century fashion for a genre of painting, the fêtes galantes, popularized by artists like Watteau and Lancret, in which numerous characters populate an idyllic pastoral landscape and enjoy music, reading or picnics. Lid missing. H. 11 cm
