Workshop of Johann Friedrich Overbeck (Lubeck 1789 - 1869 Ro - Lot 367
Workshop of Johann Friedrich Overbeck (Lubeck 1789 - 1869 Rome) Study for a bearded soldier wearing a bourguignotte Oil on paper mounted on panel 23.5 x 17.3 cm . On the back, handwritten annotations suggesting attribution; partially torn printed label: "Galleria B... / R[oma?]". Our study is perhaps part of the elaboration process for Overbeck's cycle of frescoes dedicated to "Jerusalem Delivered", in the Tasso Room of the Casino Giustiniani Massimo (Rome, Lateran, 1818/1819). In a preparatory drawing for the "Death of Clorinde" episode, preserved in a private collection in Lubeck, a knight in the lower right-hand corner of the composition, involved in carrying a corpse, displays the same posture and more or less the same equipment (cf. Heise, Johann Friedrich Overbeck: das künstlerische Werk und seine literarischen und autobiographischen Quellen, no. 92, ill.).
