Chased and gilded bronze "à la palme du souvenir" clock feat - Lot 303
Chased and gilded bronze "à la palme du souvenir" clock featuring a bust of King Louis XVI with knotted palm leaves set on an entablature draped with a fringed canopy, frieze of leaves, dots and fleurs-de-lis. The white and blue enameled dial signed "Robin à Paris"; for Robert Robin (1742-1799); with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic for the minutes. Resting on an oblong white marble base decorated with a frieze of pearls and foliage escaping from a centered fleur-de-lys. Resting on six small flattened ball feet. Late 18th - Early 19th century H. 55 cm - W. 31.5 cm - D. 17 cm (missing back) Our bust of Louis XVI is inspired by the marble bust commissioned from Louis Simon Boizot by Marie-Antoinette in 1777. Boizot (1743-1809) for the Petit Trianon. The overall harmony of the decoration (palm leaf, bust in majesty and fleur-de-lys drapery) suggests that this was most likely a commemorative clock, a posthumous tribute.
